Surprise follows Surprise Maphumulo, an 18-year-old professional Zulu surfer from Durban, South Africa: a natural jokester with a style and wit entirely his own, whose easy humor in front of the camera gives way to something deeper. Made in critical dialogue with Bruce Brown's The Endless Summer (1966), whose idyllic vision of South African surf culture erased its racial realities, the film reclaims that coastline's story from the personal narrative of one such surfer. Between the jokes, Surprise opens up about family, hardship, and the losses that keep pulling him back to the water. What emerges is a portrait of surfing that, rather as an escape, is an inheritance: a space where healing, agency, and belonging are being fostered in a historically exclusive environment.
